......Laura D'Andre was a very good Betty Rizzo, especially in the torch song, "There Are Worse Things I Could Do," and the aptly nasty, "Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee," sung by Adrienne Barbeau and Rosie O'Donnell in earlier productions.

The last half of the show does not disappoint, as it seems like the the performances just keep getting better and better. “Rock ‘n’ Roll Party Queen” is a fun number, performed by both Danny and Roger at a party with the T-Birds and Pink Ladies. But it pales in comparison to the passionate performance that Rizzo gives as she sings “There Are Worse Things I Could Do.” During the song, Laura D’Andre shows off her powerful voice, and gives it everything she has. This is amongst the standout performances of the show.

While the rest of the cast was admirably strong, Laura D'Andre was especially notable in the role of the cranky rebel Rizzo.

There is talent up there—Laura D’Andre as the tough-but-insecure BettyRizzo, leader of the Pink Ladies (the girls’ auxiliary group to the boys’ T-Birds) has a good set of pipes, but I’m not sure “There are Worse Things I Could Do,” should be sung as a power ballad.

“I must mention Petra – the engaging maid of Fredrick’s household. Played by the darkly attractive Laura D’Andre she represents the spirit of lust and romance. She succeeds in seducing Henrik, and vividly brings out the pathos and regret of  the  poignant  The Miller’s Son in Act II. Her voice is deep and full of range, her stage presence vivid.   she sings “There are mouths to be kissed Before mouths to be fed, and there’s many a tryst and there’s many a bed. There’s a lot I’ll have missed but I’ll not have been dead when I die! And a person should celebrate everything passing by.”

Ms. D’Andre makes this song really work. ALNM  is her New York theatrical debut. She’s a recent graduate of UC Irvine with a BA in drama. Welcome to New York kid, I think you’re going to be around a long, long time.”

“Laura D'Andre is lusty as Petra, the maid. My only caveat with this show -- and has been from day one -- is Petra's song "The Miller's Son" near the end of the show. Its hedonistic philosophy has already been trumpeted throughout and the number seems gratuitous and something of a brake to the show's flow. That said, D'Andre sings it with humor and intensity.”

“And the solos — from Penny Fuller’s fully realized version of Desirée’s ironic lament, “Send In the Clowns,” to Laura D’Andre’s forceful rendition of a lesser-known showstopper, “The Miller’s Son” — have all been polished to a high gloss.”

“A strong Laura D'Andre nearly stops the show when, as Anne's maid Petra, she considers her own wild oats in "The Miller's Son." Katie Henney more than holds her own in this veteran cast as Desiree's daughter, Fredrika.”

Laura D'Andre breaks your heart as Eponine, the street beggar who pines for Marius”

Though 2008 was clearly the year of the musical in San Diego, audiences saw some fine comedies and dramas as well. In the musical genre, audiences enjoyed the resurrection (at Tenth Avenue Theatre) of Jonathan Larson’s “Tick, Tick ... Boom!” with the splendid Jim Chatham as Jonathan; the world premiere of “Dancing in the Dark” at the Old Globe, with a memorable performance by Patrick Page as the egotistical director………..a grand “Les Miserables” at Vista’s Moonlight Theatre, especially the Eponine of Laura D’Andre; and what felt like a musical in Moises Kaufman’s Beethoven-centered play “33 Variations” at La Jolla Playhouse.”
